Educational?

I am sure you read about the hub-bub about the county library running matinee movies, with one being “The Wrath of Man”. The county council talked about this at the last meeting. After three councilmen spoke, I weighed in on the issue.

In sum, the library is an educational institution under South Carolina law 4-9-38. I did not see anything educational in the movie. I gave many examples of how it was not educational with the constant use of the F, S and C word. I saw no educational value in the violence or the direction or plot of the movie – it has been made a million times.

Most importantly, there was no educational value in the scene of the brothel with the under-aged/ trafficked girls, two clearly injured, one on the floor laid out and one in the back screaming in pain as she was being sexually and physically abused to the sounds of men getting off on it. In sum, showing this movie at a 1:30 library matinee, did not reach the library’s educational standard in my view. See some of the dialog from that physical/ sexual abuse of girls scene.

Like I said in the video, I was one of the few who actually saw the movie, but everyone seemed to have an opinion or review on it.

Someone at the library actually wrote a review on it. Here is the review they put on the library door. Sad. The person assigned to review it for the library didn't even watch the movie. H is seeking revenge because his son was killed in a armor car robbery gone bad, not his daughter committing suicide. H didn't even have a daughter.

By the way, this is not censorship – read the hallmark Supreme Court ruling in the case on censorship (Island Trees School District vs. Pico (1982). I like everyone else, I gave my opinion. The issue was put on the council agenda, and I gave my opinion. The county council took no action to stop the showing of the movie (it was shown two days later). In fact the county council has no authority to pick and choose which movies the library shows. Additionally, the movie is on the shelf and not being removed from the library if you choose to check it out.
